Possible refrigerator thermostat problems

The thermostat is a device which controls temperature variations of the cooling system. This device allows the user to set the desired cooling level of the refrigerator. Once set, the thermostat will cause the compressor to turn on or off in order to maintain a desired constant temperature.

Therefore, the thermostat is an important item so that the refrigerator works properly. Any problem with it will harm the entire cooling system.

To perform maintenance on this device, we’ve prepared for contractors a list of possible problems with the thermostat, their causes and how to solve them:

Thermostat doesn’t switch on
Turn the thermostat knob to the maximum setting (coldest) and see if the compressor starts. If it doesn’t, check if it can be one of the other problems listed below.

Thermostat with no current passing through its contacts
Place a wire bridge between the thermostat terminals. If the compressor starts, replace the thermostat.

Thermostat doesn’t switch off
Check if the thermostat bulb setting is correct. Turn the thermostat knob to the minimum setting (least cold) and check if the compressor turns off. If the problem persists, replace the thermostat.

Thermostat making noise
Inform the user that it’s normal to hear a click when the thermostat turns on and off. However, make sure the thermostat is properly secured.

Thermostat with loose bulb
Properly secure the thermostat bulb.

Thermostat with bulb out of its original position
Position the bulb according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Inappropriate thermostat
Verify if the thermostat model used is the one indicated by the manufacturer. If necessary, consult the manufacturer of the refrigeration system.

When replacing the thermostat, always remember to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and select a suitable device. Proper maintenance will ensure a longer life for the compressor as well as the refrigerator itself.
